Robertina, age 38, motor disability: improving independence in the neighbourhood
Editorial data: Portale SIVA Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus
Abstract: Roberta is 38 years old and she was affected by a meningoencephalomyelitis 7 years ago. She moves very slowly and she finds all her activities very tiring. She lives in a scarcely accessible flat on the third floor without lift, and she rarely goes out. In the years her conditions got worse: now she gets rapidly tired when she walks, climbs the stairs, washes heself and does the houseworks, so she has to reduce her free time activities. She would like to discover aids and solutions that help her going round the city and to the supermarket idependently, washing herself in the bathroom in an less tiring way and using the gas cooker and the sink. She has a manual wheelchair which she can't use in her small flat. She has a driving licence and a special car but she can't use it very much, because she doesn't know the roads. Analyzing her demands and considering the assistive devices she has got, a solution for her problems was found. The purpose of the project is to give Roberta a stronger autonomy, to exploit her residual abilities and to help her discovering new resources.

Ermanno, 61 years old. Autonomy in daily life for a person on hemodialysis
Editorial data: ESPERIENZE
Abstract: Ermanno has been on hemodialysis for about 25 years and has experienced two kidney transplants. Although in the last ten years the motor situation has worsened, he never lost his nerve and he used several strategies in order to improve his functions and make the environment more likely to have social interaction. By now, Ermanno has been using the manual wheelchair for three years. The adaptation of his house particularly enhanced the use of the bathroom. Outdoor spaces in the district have been partially modified to allow the passage of a wheelchair on the sidewalk after a request to the Local Authority. This project is aimed at further improving home accessibility and activities related to daily living (ADL). Moreover, in order to promote Ermanno’s need for autonomy when moving outside, we will proceed to the prescription of a power wheelchair. Currently, only part of this project has been realized, but the changes made so far have already led to an improvement of his quality of life and a lower burden of care.

Elena, 15 years old. Autonomy in daily life for a person with an outcome of severe head injury
Editorial data: Portale SIVA Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi
Abstract: This paper presents the story of a 15 years old girl that one day, apparently similar to another, going out of school has a car accident. The awakening after the four long, agonizing days in a coma reassures her family, but for Elena is just the beginning of a long journey full of changes and of situations in which it is hard to accept a reality and a body that she does not recognize as hers. The paper describes the progressive return of Elena to a life still to be lived and felt though the circumstances have changed. In particular, we focused on the solutions chosen for mobility (wheelchair with the seating system), for the return home (removal of architectural barriers at home), for personal autonomy and communication (alphabetical communicator and later communication software).

Mobility of frail people in the urban environment
Editorial data: Dispense Corso di Alta Formazione "Tecnologie per l'Autonomia". Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus
Abstract: The lecture analyses the themes of usability, safety and pleasantness of urban spaces from the point of view of pedestrian users, also mentioning international researches on intermediate and entry areas to the city. In particular, it analyses the several issues about mobility, orientation, perception of spaces faced by people with motor, sensorial and cognitive disabilities, by elderly people, children, foreign people and people with temporary impairments. Furthermore, the lecture suggests design criteria to improve the usability of these spaces, pathways, equipment, services, signs (in urban and architectural planning and environmental communication) in terms of compatibility with different needs, abilities and expectations and it illustrates them through examples of good practices implemented in different cities, both in Italy and worldwide.
