Gabriele, age 56, motor disability: improving independence in communication by means of eye-gaze
Editorial data: Portale SIVA Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus
Abstract: Gabriele: a clear and subtle mind trapped in a body that doesn't respond to commands. An ictus relegated him to the immobility and to a persistent silence from which he would like to escape, satisfying his fundamental needs: communication, interaction with the world, expression of feelings and thoughts. Gabriele can only communicate through his eyelids: looking up means yes, half-opening the eyes means no. With a 21 yellow and green letters table, he becomes a marksman of the alphabet. Yet his disease has been finally defeated by the patient's will and motivation and by the intelligence of the carers who believed in new technologies. This experience presents the experimentation results of a new eye-blink driven sensor for PC.

Elena, 15 years old. Autonomy in daily life for a person with an outcome of severe head injury
Editorial data: Portale SIVA Fondazione Don Carlo Gnocchi
Abstract: This paper presents the story of a 15 years old girl that one day, apparently similar to another, going out of school has a car accident. The awakening after the four long, agonizing days in a coma reassures her family, but for Elena is just the beginning of a long journey full of changes and of situations in which it is hard to accept a reality and a body that she does not recognize as hers. The paper describes the progressive return of Elena to a life still to be lived and felt though the circumstances have changed. In particular, we focused on the solutions chosen for mobility (wheelchair with the seating system), for the return home (removal of architectural barriers at home), for personal autonomy and communication (alphabetical communicator and later communication software).

The environment in relation to visual disabilities
Editorial data: Dispense Corso di Alta Formazione "Ausili per l'Autonomia e la Partecipazione". Associazione La Nostra Famiglia IRCCS E.Medea
Abstract: Starting from the new model of disability provided by the ICF, the lecture analyzes relationships between health conditions and the life context of a person with vision problems. Particular attention is given to the functional aspects such as visual acuity, visual field and colors perception, in order to better understand the broad spectrum of issues related to low vision or not-practically-usable vision. Visual problems often reflect on orientation, mobility, personal autonomy and access to information. Through specific rehabilitation interventions it is possible to achieve a good level of autonomy thanks to the various specific assistive products for visually impaired and blind. The second part of the lecture is focused on the relationship between the person with low vision or blindness and the context of life. The various perceptive barriers are discussed, as well as the different facilitators who can change the performance of the person with disabilities in various social, cultural and professional contexts. This relationship between the person and the context is supported by a 'virtual walk' n different national and international contexts.
