Abstract: Domingo is a man aged 34 who, after an accident at work, suffers from De Quervain's disease and a slight lack of strength of the left arm. Despite the aftermath of the accident Domingo continues to work for the same transport company. In this short presentation potential risks arising from the performance of this particular work are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the workplace more secure and protected.

Antonietta, 46 years old. Workplace adaptation for a bank employee, with an outcome of childhood polio

Currently she uses a pair of crutches and canes for moving outdoors. Antonietta works as a clerk in a bank. Bruno, 52 years old. Adaptation of the workplace for an English teacher, with myelopathy

Abstract: Bruno is a man aged 52 suffering from myelopathy with a disability recognized by 100%. Bruno uses a manual wheelchair, and is Professor of English, working at a major international language institute, but now gives English lessons at home, as the disease forces him to stay home for a long time. The type of task he has to carry out in itself is not characterized by a high level of risk but the case highlights some typical aspects of the home adaptation when having a disability. In this short presentation risks and inadequacies for home accessibility are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the workplace more secure and protected.

Carla, 33 years old. Prevention of occupational risk for a person employed as a textile worker

Abstract: Carla is a woman aged 33, since 1991 she has been working for a major textile company. In 2003, during work, Carla starts having pain in her neck, in the joints of hand fingers and in her wrist, elbows and shoulders. She also declares to feel shakes and pangs in the hands when handling objects with subsequent immobilization of the same for several minutes. This involves uneasiness and loss of function in performing certain daily activities such as opening or closing jars, so Carla is obliged to ask for help from family members. In this short presentation potential risks arising from the performance of this particular work are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the workplace more secure and protected. The proposed project is expected to lower the risk of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs , that could lead to work-related onset of disability and to the risk of losing the job.

Carlo, 57 years old. Workplace adaptation for a person employed in a machine shop, with Parkinson's disease

Abstract: Carlo is a man aged 57, suffering from Parkinson's disease. Charles is currently the owner of a workshop, where deals with repairing and selling products. Since 2007, due to the development of the disease, he started feeling early motor fluctuations in the form of wearing-off. He complains of problems, sometimes severe, in performing fine movements with his right hand, particularly debilitating for the mechanical activity (for example he can’t handle a screwdriver with enough accuracy and power). In this short presentation potential risks arising from the performance of this particular work are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the workplace more secure and protected. This study highlights a problem that is often found among self-employed, small family businesses, craftsmen or artists who autonomously regulate their activities, often not knowing the regulations in terms of safety and risks for their health.

Clara, 25 years old. Adaptation of the workplace for a person employed in bank, with hypotonia of the lower limbs

Abstract: Clara is a girl of 25 years suffering from a severe hypotonia of the lower limbs with a recognized disability of 100%. She always needs support for personal mobility and is and unable to move on her own except for short routes. Thanks to the Local Employment Service, she started working at a major Italian bank, as help-desk. Domenico, 40 years old. Workplace adaptation for a factory worker in the engineering industry, with results from a road accident trauma

Abstract: Domenico is a 40 years old man who has been recognized with a disability of 75% as a result of injuries reported in two separate road accidents (1990, 2002), that led him to have the limb completely rigid. Since 2006 he has been working for a large freezers manufacturer as a welder. Francesco, 42 years old. Adaptation of the workplace for a computer expert with phocomelia

Abstract: Francesco is a man aged 42 who has been granted a disability pension of 100% following a diagnosis of phocomelia. He also benefits from an accompanying compensation. Francesco is responsible for remote computer support remotely to of a large organization, as Help Desk and, in part, as a programmer. Although Francesco needs to use a power wheelchair to move independently, his workplace does not allow him to use it and there are also many other technical issues. Giorgio, 57 years old. Workplace adaptation for a warehouse keeper with severe lumbar spine scoliosis

Despite the severe disability, Giorgio has always worked in the field of agriculture and landscaping, but now works as a warehouse keeper in a hospital and is responsible for preparing material to send to different departments. The major risk factors lie in the handling of loads, linked to the pathology of the spine, and in the inadequate environment. Mauro, 50 years old. Adaptation of the workplace for a systems analyst with spastic quadriplegia

Abstract: Mauro is a man aged 50 suffering from spastic quadriplegia with disabilities recognized by 67%. According to his medical history, he reported problems in the spine due to spondylolisthesis for which, last year, underwent a surgical intervention. Complications due to an infection forced Mauro to stay at home for six months, after which he returned to work. In addition to the problem at the spine, in 2000, he had an operation for carpal tunnel. Mauro works as a mainframe systems engineer at a major Italian bank, three days in the office and the remaining two days works from home. In this short presentation inadequacies and potential risks linked to his home accessibility are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the house more secure and protected also as a workplace.

Nadia, 37 years old. Home adaptation for a person with paraplegia

Sonia, 37 years old. Workplace adaptation for a textile worker with work related disabling diseases

Abstract: Sonia is a woman aged 37 with severe disability of the right arm due to carpal tunnel disease and De Quervain's syndrome contracted during the performance of her job. With the progression of the disease and despite surgery, Sonia lost the ability to perform her function at work. Sonia was then moved to a different position within the department: this solution, also thanks to a support, allowed her to continue working for the same company without worsening her condition. However, reorganizing the workplace is necessary, also because now a new worker is exposed to the same risk. This short presentation highlights potential risks arising from the performance of this particular work and presents a suitable design solution for safety at work.

Vito, 39 years old. Workplace adaptation for a hospital auxiliary with slipped discs

At present he deals with the manual handling of patients, in particular the transport of patients from the wards to the operating room and vice versa, and the handling of technical material. Gigliola 53 years old. Workplace adaptation for a factory worker in the engineering industry, with work related upper limb impairments

Abstract: Gigliola is a woman aged 53, suffering from work related upper limb impairments, leading to a force reduction when holding small objects, and difficulty in performing fine finger movements. Since 2000 she works for a large freezers manufacturer of. The position occupied by Gigliola, that presumably caused her impairments, involved the assembling and mounting of panels. In 2006, following a medical advice, and not being able to perform her function because of reduced motor skills, Gigliola was repositioned to another job within the same company. This solution doesn’t solve the problem of re-designing this particular workplace, as it’s now occupied by a new person, subject to the same risks. In this short presentation inadequacies and potential risks arising from the performance of this particular work are highlighted, as well as the suitable design solution making the workplace more secure and protected.
