Abstract:
Temporary or permanent absence of oral language hinders interpersonal exchanges and reduces chances of social participation. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) helps overcome communication difficulties and facilitates social interaction, thus limiting marginalization of disabled persons. The clinical foundations of the AAC approach were laid in North America in the 70ies, initially in order to meet communication needs of people without oral language capabilities because of severe congenital or acquired neurological damages. The AAC approach embodies all strategies, techniques and technological tools that can be used by people with disabilities to communicate in everyday life. AAC provides not only the functional tools for communication: it also promotes and enhances the interaction and participation capabilities, as a fundamental prerequisites of communication. AAC interventions are therefore addressed not only to people with communication needs, but also to all their main communication partners.
