A simple and quite cheap solution to remote control electrical appliances (e.g. a table lamp or a fan) is using a remote controlled socket. There are different kind of these devices available on the market, using infrared or radiofrequency remote, before you purchase one of it make sure you can easily use the buttons on the remote. Some of the model, beside the basic on/off function, also have a timer function that allows to automatically turn off the appliance after a preset period of time.
